Florida Septic Works connects Ocala and Marion County homeowners with independent local septic companies for free, no-obligation quotes. Florida Septic Works is a referral service, not a septic tank contractor; the work is done by independent DEP-registered septic tank contractors, who quote, contract and do the job.

What counts as a septic emergency

  • Wastewater coming up in tubs, showers, toilets or floor drains.
  • Sewage surfacing over the tank or the drain field.
  • A high-water alarm on a pump tank that keeps sounding.
  • A pump tank that stopped after a power outage or tripped breaker.
  • Flood water standing over the tank or drain field.

A single slow drain or a pump-out that is simply due is not an emergency; book routine septic tank pumping instead.

What to do right away

  1. Stop using water

Hold off on laundry, dishwashers and showers and limit flushing.

  2. Keep people and pets clear

Stay off wet areas over the tank and field, and never open or climb into a septic tank.

  3. Switch off the pump if water is rising

UF/IFAS advises turning the septic pump off at the breaker before flooding reaches it.

  4. Call and ask the right questions

Ask when the company can come, the after-hours rate, its DEP septic tank contractor registration number and the septage disposal service permit number on the truck.

What’s included in emergency septic service

  • The contractor finds whether the blockage is in the house line, the tank or the field.
  • The tank is pumped, all chambers included, or the pumper documents in writing why a full pump-out was not done (Rule 62-6.010(4)(a)).
  • Pumps, floats, alarms and the breaker are checked on pump-tank systems.
  • The outlet filter is cleared and the lid is resealed and secured.
  • Septage goes to a DEP-approved facility; land application has been banned since January 1, 2016 (s. 381.0065(6)).
  • Findings and any repair quote are put in writing.

Hurricanes, high water and Marion’s permit rule

Most of Marion’s emergencies follow rain. Ocala averages 51.64 inches a year, with 27.91 inches (54%) falling June through September (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), and on flatwoods soils such as Blichton, Pomona and Flemington the seasonal water table can sit within about 6–12 inches of the surface. During Hurricane Milton in October 2024, a CoCoRaHS gauge south of Ocala recorded 9.68 inches (National Weather Service).

UF/IFAS storm guidance: reduce water use in the days before a forecast hurricane, switch the septic pump off before flooding, stop using fixtures while the drain field is flooded, and do not have the tank pumped until floodwaters recede. After the water is gone, any storm-damage repair needs a DEP permit; DEP has permitted Marion septic work since July 1, 2025. In the Silver Springs and Rainbow Springs BMAP, a repair permit triggers the ENR (nitrogen-reducing) upgrade unless sewer is planned and funded. Most of Marion County is inside the BMAP; confirm your parcel on DEP’s BMAP map and read the ENR guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can a septic tank be pumped during a flood?

UF/IFAS advises not to have the septic tank pumped until floodwaters recede. In saturated ground, an emptied tank can be pushed upward. While the drain field is flooded, avoid using household water, including toilets, and have the system inspected by a septic professional as soon as possible after the flooding ends.

How fast can a septic company come in an emergency?

It depends on the company and the day. A company may be able to come the same or next day; ask when you call. Florida Septic Works is a referral service and does not dispatch trucks, so it cannot promise an arrival time. We usually reply the same day to quote requests sent through the form.

How much does emergency septic pumping cost?

There is no reliable published figure for emergency or after-hours septic pumping, so ask for the after-hours rate up front, before the truck rolls. For comparison, routine pumping of a 900–1,000 gallon tank typically runs about $225–$400, and Ocala jobs average about $380. These are estimates, not quotes.

Does storm damage repair need a permit in Marion County?

Yes, if the repair needs a DEP repair, modification or replacement permit, and since July 1, 2025 DEP issues those in Marion County. In the Silver Springs and Rainbow Springs BMAP, that permit requires an ENR nitrogen-reducing system unless sewer is planned and funded. Ask the contractor whether the storm repair needs a permit before work starts.
