How to read these numbers

The ACS does not ask about septic or sewer, so septic counts come from the state parcel inventory, and the percentages compare those parcels with ACS housing units. A parcel and a housing unit are not the same thing (a mobile-home park parcel can hold many homes), so treat each ratio as approximate. Towns without a Census place use ZIP code figures, labeled as such; some ZIP housing totals reach into neighboring counties, which can push a ratio toward 100%.

A note on The Villages

The Villages is mostly in Sumter County: of its 83,498 residents (ACS 2024 5-year), 75,457 live in the Sumter part and 8,041 in the Marion part. The Marion part is on central sewer, so septic requests there are uncommon. Septic permits on the Sumter side come from the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County, not DEP.
