Septic Tank Repair in Ocala
Septic tank repair in Ocala and across Marion County usually means fixing the parts that wear out first: lids, baffles, risers, outlet filters, pumps and alarms. Here is what each repair involves, what it typically costs and when a DEP permit, and with it Marion County’s nitrogen-reducing upgrade rule, applies.

What’s included in a septic tank repair
- Lids and covers. The contractor replaces a cracked lid and seals it; Rule 62-6.010(4) requires lids to be “completely sealed and secured”.
- Baffles. The contractor repairs or replaces a damaged inlet or outlet baffle, which holds scum and solids back.
- Risers. A riser extends the tank opening to grade so future service starts without digging.
- Outlet filters. Florida requires an approved outlet filter on septic tanks (Rule 62-6.008(2)). The contractor cleans a clogged filter or replaces a broken one.
- Pumps and alarms. On pump-tank systems, the contractor tests the effluent pump, floats and high-water alarm and repairs or replaces what failed (pumps count as part of the system under s. 489.551(3)).
Which septic tank repairs need a DEP permit in Marion County?
Since July 1, 2025, Florida DEP’s Onsite Sewage Program, not the county health department, permits septic work in Marion County. Work that repairs, modifies or replaces the system under Chapter 62-6 needs a construction permit first. Ask the contractor in writing whether your job does; DEP’s Marion staff ([email protected], 850-245-8362) can also answer.
The permit is what triggers the ENR upgrade. Under the Silver Springs and Rainbow Springs BMAP, final and effective April 27, 2026, an existing system must be upgraded to an enhanced nutrient-reducing (ENR) system, with at least 65% nitrogen reduction, whenever a DEP repair, modification or replacement permit is needed, unless sewer is planned and funded for the property. That can turn a repair of a few thousand dollars into a $15,000–$35,000+ system (ENR cost guide). A working system with no permit need does nothing now. Most of Marion County is inside the BMAP; confirm your parcel on DEP’s BMAP map. See the ENR guide and permits guide.

Why Marion County ground is hard on septic tanks
About a quarter of the county outside the national forest is excessively drained Candler sand, and NRCS rates 87.6% of that survey area “very limited” for septic absorption fields (national ratings, not Florida permit criteria; most systems here work). On sandy ridges, effluent can reach the aquifer and springs too fast. On flatwoods soils such as Blichton and Pomona, the seasonal water table sits within about 6–12 inches of the surface.
Ocala averages 51.64 inches of rain a year, 54% of it June through September (NOAA 1991–2020). After hurricane flooding, UF/IFAS advises not pumping a tank until floodwaters recede, since an emptied tank in saturated ground can lift. Marion has 489 reported subsidence incidents in the Florida Geological Survey database; FGS says most are unverified and lists broken septic tanks among non-sinkhole causes.

Signs you need septic tank repair
- A lid that is cracked, sunken or no longer seals.
- The pump alarm sounds, or the pump runs constantly or not at all.
- Drains stay slow or gurgle even after a recent pump-out.
- A septic odor near the tank or a wet patch over it.
Before hiring, ask for the contractor’s DEP septic tank contractor registration number (check it on DEP’s active-contractor search), the septage permit number on the truck, proof of insurance and a written quote that says whether a permit is included. For routine service, see septic tank pumping; for field problems, drain field repair.

Frequently asked questions
Will my septic tank repair trigger the ENR upgrade?
Only if the job needs a DEP permit to repair, modify or replace the system under Chapter 62-6. In the Silver Springs and Rainbow Springs BMAP, which covers most of Marion County, that permit requires a nitrogen-reducing system with at least 65% nitrogen reduction unless sewer is planned and funded for the property. Ask the contractor before signing.
How much does septic tank repair cost in Ocala?
Typical published ranges run about $150–$500 for a lid, $300–$900 for a baffle, $100–$600 for a riser and $250–$400 to repair a pump, with $1,000 or more to replace one. Overall repairs average about $1,830. These are estimates, not quotes; the contractor’s written quote is what counts.
Who issues septic repair permits in Marion County?
Florida DEP’s Onsite Sewage Program has handled septic permits in Marion County since July 1, 2025, not the county health department. Applications go through DEP’s online portal at osp.floridadep.gov. Marion program staff can be reached at [email protected] or 850-245-8362. The septic contractor normally applies for the permit on the job.
Are septic tank risers worth adding?
A riser brings the tank opening up to ground level, so later pump-outs and inspections need no digging to find the lid. Published prices run about $100–$600, and the sources differ widely. Florida tanks are multi-chambered, so a tank can have more than one opening; ask how many risers the quote covers.
